Presbyterian Theologian. Nationally known spokesperson for stout fundamentalism in his Presbyterian denomination, from which he was finally ousted. In 1936 he formed a new denomination called The Orthodox Presbyterian Church, which remains a small and very conservative group. He is noted as a defender of orthodox Protestantism in the Fundamentalist/Modernist debate of the 1920s. For many years he was a professor of New Testament at Princeton Theological Seminary. He left that institution in 1929 to found Westminster Seminary in Philadelphia. J. Gresham Machen was the author of a number of books on the Bible, theology and the Church. (J. Vaudry)
