Newton, age 18 and a resident of Iredell County, North Carolina, enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 13 April 1863 in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was mustered as a Private in Company F, 32nd North Carolina Infantry. He was captured 10 May 1864 at Wilderness, Virginia. He was imprisoned at Point Lookout Prison, Maryland and then transferred to Elmira Prison, New York on 3 August 1864. He arrived at Elmira Prison in Elmira, New York on 6 August 1864 and was held as a prisoner of war until his death on 20 September 1864. He died of chronic diarrhea and was original buried in grave #351. Grave number is now 333.ALEXANDER W.H. 09/20/64 NC F,32nd
