James Henry Selvidge, 91, died on February 2, 2013 in Palo Alto, CA., after a long battle with heart disease. He was born in 1921 in Wheatland, Missouri to Roy and Mantie (Mashburn) Selvidge. After graduating from Wheatland High School in 1939 he joined the CCC in Missouri. He later moved to California and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942, where he served on the aircraft carrier, the USS Essex. Following World War II, he returned to California and in 1951 became a Palo Alto firefighter, holding the rank of Captain when he retired in 1974. Mr. Selvidge married Betty G. Anderson in 1957. She preceded him in death in 1977.

An enthusiastic gardener, he also enjoyed photography, genealogy, working out at the Y, traveling and attending Navy reunions.

Survivors include his sister, Mary Ellen Selvidge Boren; nieces Kathryn Selvidge and Nancy Boren Solohubow, nephews John Boren and Harry Selvidge, Jr., stepson, Richard Squires, step-granddaughters Michelle and Julie Squires and special friend, Lucille Albertson.

Those wishing to honor Jim's memory may contribute to the American Heart Association or the Alicia Ann Ruch Burn Foundation. Funeral arrangements were made by Roller & Hapgood & Tinney.
