Brother of Riddick H. Herndon and Yarborough Herndon

Killed while engaged in a reconnaissance patrol near Guadalcanal. He was awarded posthumously the Purple Heart and the Navy Cross. The destroyer U.S.S. Raymond W. Herndon was named in his honor.
