Stephen W. Getchell, Jr. was the only son of Alta Mabel Hunter and Stephen W. Getchell, Sr. He was the very much loved grandson of Elizabeth Porter Coffey. He was born and raised in the Bronx, New York. He was a member of the First Marine Division, USMC, and was killed in action in defense of his country in Okinawa, Japan on 16 Jun 1945. He was only 19 years old. In his youth, he was a boy scout with his friend Richard Weir - both later became Marines, Stephen with the 1st division and Richard with the 6th division. Both fought in Okinawa. (Per scrapbook kept by Stephen's grandmother)
