Son of Conrad and Catherine Weitzer Hock. His parents died within six years of each other, leaving three children orphans: Robert B, Eva [wife of Peter Hoffman, of NYC] and Johanna [wife of Charles Gantz]. At the age of ten, Robert acted on his mother's advice to join his uncle, her brother, who was living in New York City. In the spring of 1848, sailing on "John Charles" from Havre, reached New York City. While a teen became master of the bugle calls and placed in the Tenth United States Infantry as a bugler. While a Captain of Company F, Twelfth New York Cavalry he was taken prisoner and confined in Andersonville for three weeks then transferred to three other prisons. Part of six Officers he escaped from prison for 36 days. His sufferings were intense, but he persevered at last by reaching the Union lines. By the time he was sent to his old regiment, only twelve men had not been captured. In August 1865 he resigned his position and returned to New York City. Captain Hock was proprietor of a bakery in New York, then coming to Goshen, bought out the proprietor of a meat market which he ran for sixteen years. In 1886 he built the St. Elmo Hotel which is the finest in the town.

In 1861, in New York City, he married Miss Caroline C Yoerg. They were the parents of six children including Robert, Fred, Frank, Hettie [wife of Clarence M Vail]. In politics the Captain is a stalwart Republican.
