Beloved Pioneer Woman, Resident of Moab for 30 Years Answers Final Summons Tuesday, at Age of 72
--Death claimed another of Moab's pioneer mothers, Tuesday, when Mrs. Harriett J. Bliss, wife of O. D. Bliss answered the final summons, following an extended illness. Mrs. Bliss had been in serious condition for several months, and although loving relatives and friends surrounded her with every possible attention, her advanced age made recovery impossible, and death did not come unexpectedly.
--Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon from the ward meeting house and were presided over by Bishop W. D. Hammond. The speakers were O. W. McConkie of Monticello, J. P. Latsen, W. R. McConkie and Bishop Hammond. A solo, "Oh, My Father," was rendered by Mrs. W. E. Gordon, and several selections were given by the choir. The speakers paid high tribute to the estimable character of Mrs. Bliss, and eulogized her long life of service to her family and neighbors.
--Mrs. Bliss was 72 years of age. She was born at Big Cottonwood, Salt Lake county, February 16, 1850. In 1867 she was married to O. D. Bliss at salt Lake City, and in 1892 they came to Moab and established their home here. They spent much of their time at their ranch in Brown's Hole, 25 miles southeast of Moab, until about five years ago, since which time they had resided her continuously.
--Mrs. Bliss is survived by her husband and eleven children, who are: Mrs. Mattie Birch of Duchesne, William J. Bliss of Moab, Mrs. Thirza Birch of Price, O. D. Bliss, Jr. of British Columbia, Mrs. Hattie Nash of McCracken, Kansas; Mrs. Ada Haller of Mancos, Colo., Mrs. Nora Taylor of Moab, S. Marion Bliss of Standardville, Utah; Vernon Bliss and Mrs. Vern Wright of Moab, and Mrs. Pearl Butt of Dove Creek, Colo. Eight of the children were at Moab for the funeral, and two of the others residing at distant points, visited their mother shortly before her death.
--Mrs. Bliss had a wide circle of friends throughout Utah, and news of her death will be received with keen sorrow.
