MINIER - Donald F. Babb, 83, of 1505 N. Fourth St., Pekin, formerly of Minier, died at 5:14 a.m. Wednesday (Feb. 12, 1997) at Pekin Hospital. His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul United Church of Christ, Pekin, the Rev. Dwight E. Borden officiating. Burial will be in Minier Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel, and one hour before the service Saturday at the church. Survivors include his wife, Dorene Babb; one daughter, Donna L. Conway, Farmington Hills, Mich.; two great-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-granddaughter.
Also surviving are one son-in-law, Clifford Conway, Farmington Hills; two grandchildren, Craig F. Conway, rural Minier; and Kelly L. Conway, Farmington Hills.
One brother preceded him in death.
He was born Sept. 28, 1913, in Oakland, to Earle F. and Floteal Gilbert Babb. He married Dorene A. Wehmeier Dec. 25, 1942, in Minier.
Mr. Babb was a 1931 graduate of Minier Community High School and a 1939 graduate of University of Illinois College of Commerce, Champaign, where he earned a bachelor's degree in accounting.
He worked for Allis Chalmers in Springfield until he entered the service in 1941.
We was a World War II Army veteran, serving in the Pacific Theater. He attained the rank of major. He graduated from officer training school and separated from the armed forces in 1947.
He retired in 1978 from Caterpillar Inc. after 30 years. His last position was controller of the Mapleton Foundry.
While employed with Caterpillar, he was instrumental in setting up a new plant and accounting department for Caterpillar in Geneva, Switzerland.
He was a former member of the Caterpillar Credit Union board of directors.
He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Pekin, where he was a member of the Knight's Sunday School Class. He was a former member of St. John United Church of Christ in Minier.
