Richard was living in Wilmington with his parents, when he was drafted 4 October
1966 in the US Army.
Upon arriving in Vietnam 4 April 1967, Richard was assigned to A Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry, 188th Infantry Brigade, USARV. A Company was 6 kilometers east of the Binh Chanh Village, when they were engaged by hostile forces. Richard died as a result of gunshot wounds to the body from hostile rifle fire.
