Blessed Severijan Baranyk, a Roman Catholic presbyter and martyr was born in Ukraine on July 18, 1889. Entering the Krekhiv Monastery of the Order of Saint Basil the Great in Krekhiv on September 24, 1904, he made his final vows on September 21, 1910 and was ordained to the priesthood on February 14, 1915. In 1932, he became the Hegumeno, or Prior of the Basilian Monastery in Drohobych.

Arrested for his faith on June 26, 1941, by the NKVD (KGB), at Drohobych, Ukrainian Galicia. He was never seen alive again by outsiders. A boy later testified he saw the tortured corpse of Father Severian, marked with a cross shaped knife slash on his chest, mutilated by tortures. There is evidence that the Soviets boiled his corpse and served it as soup to prisoners. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on June 27, 2001 in Ukraine. His liturgical memory is celebrated on April 2.
