James Charles Wiley, age 81, of Crewe, Virginia, passed away on Thursday, January 5, 2023.


He is preceded in death by his father, Jesse Kyle "Bay" Wiley; mother, Velma Beaver Payne; brothers, Jack E. Wiley and David A. Wiley; and a stepbrother, Raymond Payne Jr.


He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Sue Wakefield Fisher Wiley of Crewe, VA; daughter, Dawn Wiley Amos and son-in-law, Ricky Stuart Amos of Greensboro, NC, and son, Lance Lockhart Wiley of Crewe, VA; grandchildren, Elizabeth Victoria Amos and Stuart James Amos of Greensboro, NC; a stepsister, Linda Fallen of Rice, VA; two sisters-in-law, Martha K. Wiley of Forest, VA, and Susie B. Wiley of Boone, NC; nieces, Cynthia Wiley Kirk and husband Michael of Blowing Rock, NC, Allison Rakos and husband Chad of Forest, VA, Charlene Fallen of Farmville, VA; nephew, Joshua Wiley and wife Tiffany of Lynchburg, VA.


Jim was a graduate of Crewe High School in 1959, Lynchburg College in 1963, and received two Masters of Education, one in Administration and another in Special Education from Longwood College. He was a teacher in Madison Heights, VA, and later at Crewe Jr. High, Crewe Primary, and Nottoway Middle Schools. Jim was also a principal of Burkeville Primary, Blackstone Intermediate and Crewe Jr. High Schools. In addition, he coached baseball and golf. For a period of time, Jim left the field of education and worked in school fundraising. He was also a member of Crewe Country Club and worked as grounds keeper in his "retirement."


He was a member of Wards Chapel United Methodist Church, where he grew up singing alongside his mother, who was an organist and pianist. He was a former choir director and Sunday School teacher. Jim sang for funerals, weddings, and was a lay preacher at church on occasion. Jim enjoyed golf, tennis, baseball, softball, hunting and fishing, along with gardening and cooking. Jim won golf tournaments at Crewe Country Club and in Southside Virginia over the years, and he was the first recipient of the King Cup named after Jim King.


The family will receive friends from 3:00-5:00 pm, Sunday, January 8, 2023, in the Crewe Chapel of Joseph McMillian Funeral Home, 200 West Carolina Avenue, Crewe, VA 23930. Funeral services will follow on Monday, January 9, 2023, at 11:00 am in the Wards Chapel United Methodist Church, 7818 Namozine Road, Crewe, VA 23930. Burial will follow in Wards Chapel Cemetery with luncheon to follow.


In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wards Chapel United Methodist Church hospitality committee.
