The family migrated from Kentucky to Missouri when Joseph was a young man. They first settled in Lewis County, MO and later moved to rural Gorin, MO in Scotland County.
His first marriage was to Mary E. Smulling. They had eight children: Mary Ann, Margaret, James Arthur, Mildred, Francis Catherine, William Henry, Benjamin, and Anna Belle.
Later, Joseph married Sarah Jane Parrish. They, too, had eight children: Emma Lillian, Nellie Pearl, Joseph Richard, Lula May, Rosa Alice, Eddie, Alpha, and George Lawrence.
Joseph was a veteren of the Civil War and was a farmer by trade.
