Governor of Arkansas. He was admitted to the Arkansas Bar in 1874 and began practicing law in that year in Greenwood, Arkansas. He was elected District Attorney in 1877 and served four successive terms before being elected to the Arkansas House of Representatives in 1884. In 1886, he was elected Arkansas Circuit Judge for a four year term. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Clifton R. Breckinridge and served from 1894 until 1907. He was elected Governor of Arkansas in 1906 and took office on January 8, 1907. Shortly after his inauguration, he suffered a physical and mental breakdown and resigned the governorship on February 11, 1907. He never recovered and died in the Arkansas Hospital for Nervous Diseases in Little Rock on October 29, 1916.
