Walter and his brother, William, died from the same accident on Highway C near Eastwood. Their nephew, Virgil Samples, was driving. The truck overturned in a ditch.

October 12, 1950

Two Carter County citizens lost their lives about three o'clock Saturday afternoon when a Ford pickup truck left the highway and overturned on farm-to-market near Eastwood. Virgil Sample, driver of the pickup was seriously injured, his uncle, Walter Samples was killed instantly and another uncle, William Samples, died soon after reaching a Poplar Bluff hospital. Probable cause of the accident was a tire blowout according to the highway patrol.

William Samples has been a resident of this county for over 30 years, and leaves a wife and nine children. Walter came here only a few months ago from Kansas City and purchased a farm near the home of his brother.

Funeral services were held today at the Leuckel Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. Walsh of the Baptist church, and the two brothers were laid to rest in the Eastwood cemetery.
