Nicholas DiNinni, 87, of Rutherford Heights, Swatara Township, passed away at his home on Sunday, May 11, 2008.
Born on May 11, 1921, he was the son of the late Valentino and Assunta (Pagano) DiNinni of Rutherford Heights. A loving husband, father, grandfather and hard working community service volunteer, he will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife Mary (Bowerman) DiNinni of Rutherford Heights, and two sons: Nicholas M. DiNinni and his wife Cherie of Harrisburg, and Ronald DiNinni and his wife Judith of Hershey. He is also survived by 3 granddaughters, Laura DiNinni, Jill Demmel and her husband Bob, and April DiNinni as well as 3 great granddaughters, Caitlin DiNinni-Parker, Ashley Demmel and Lauren Demmel. Other surviving relatives include: two sisters, Jean Lebo of Harrisburg and Mary Gasper of Hershey; and two sisters-in -law Shirley DiNinni of Rutherford and Esther Koppenhaver of Harrisburg; as well as many loving nephews and nieces.
He was a veteran of World War ll, having served in the U.S. Army, 80th Division. In his early years, he worked for the Reading railroad, in the Car Shop at the Rutherford Railroad Yards. After World War II, he became a cabinet maker and ultimately retired from Stokes Millworks of Harrisburg. He later served on the Electra Realty Company, Board of Directors. In government service, he was a part-time Police Officer in Swatara Township in the early 1950's, a Justice of the Peace in Swatara Township (1963-1970), and Swatara Township's Tax Assessor in the 1970's.
He was quite active in community service organizations and was honored for his achievements by Resolution of The Pennsylvania Senate, and by Proclamation of the Swatara Township Board of Commissioners. He was a member and usher at the St. Catherine Laboure Church since 1947; a Life Member of the reliance Hose Company #1 of Rutherford where he was a member since he was a teenager. He was quite active in Lionism and was a Charter Member (1957), a Past President, and Trustee of the Rutherford Heights Lions Club. For his long term service in Lionism, he was a recipient of the prestigious Melvin Jones award. He was also active in political affairs and was an Assistant Committeeman of the Swatara Township Republican Committee. He was a Life Member of the American Legion, and a member of the Lawnton Legion Post 0998. Other organization activities include: the Capital City Lodge, Sons of Italy, the Dauphin County Fireman's Association, and the Santoni-DiNinni VFW Post 1213.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 AM, on Thursday, May 15, 2008 at St. Catherine Laboure Catholic Church, 4000 Derry St., Harrisburg, Pa. There will be a viewing on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Neill Funeral Home, 3501 Derry St., Harrisburg, Pa. Interment will be in Resurrection cemetery, 116 S. Oak Grove Rd., Harrisburg.
