Pvt Leroy W. Santimaw, 21, son of Fred Santimaw of Gouverneur, veteran of four campaigns, who took part in the D-Day invasion of Normandy on June 6. was killed in action on June 15 in France.

A telegram from the war department on Sunday informed the father as follows: "The secretary of war desires me to express his deep regret that your son, Pvt Leroy W. Santimaw was killed in action on June 15 in France. Letter follows." Signed by Ulio, the Adjutant General.

His last letter to relatives here was written on June 3 and reached them June 13. Pvt Santimaw enlisted at the age of 16 and had been in service five years. His unit of infantry was among the first troops to go overseas to the European theatre. He took part in the invasion of Africa, Sicily and Italy prior to going to England and taking part in the invasion of France. Some time ago, he was wounded and also hospitalized with malaria.

Private Santimaw was born in Gouverneur on July 19, 1922, the son of Fred and Electa Planty Santimaw. His mother died in 1933. His father resides in this village and is a farmer. Private Santimaw attended Richville high school and prior to enlistment had worked on the P. A. Graves farm on the Richville road. He made his home with two half-sisters, Ethel Morse of Gouverneur and Mrs. Blanche Rice of Spragueville.

Private Santimaw trained at Ayer Mass, Fort Grabb, NC, Camp Blanding, Ga, and Indiantown Gap, Pa.

Surviving besides the father are four sisters, Frieda Kent and Laura Santimaw of Ogdensburg, Ada Tamblin of Gouverneur and Isabelle Santimaw of Potsdam; four half-sisters, Hazel Randall of Utica, Florence Morse of Ogdensburg, Blanche Rice of Spragueville and Ethel Morse of GOuverneur, and four half-brothers, George Morse of Little Bow, Fred Morse of Potsdam, Lawrence and Howard Morse of Gouverneur.
