Betty June Barnes, 81, of McAlester, passed away Friday, November 4, 2022 at her home. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at the Adamson Baptist Church, with Pastor Tom Young officiating, along with Mindy (Beare) Williams, Bray Killingsworth and Bryce Killingsworth.


Betty June Barnes was born on November 26, 1940 in Dekalb, Texas to Tux and Viola (Owens) Bowen. She grew up in Scipio and graduated from Indianola High School. She attended Eastern State College where she earned an associate degree. She married Jim Barnes on August 8, 1964. Betty worked for the Pittsburg County Treasurer for several years, then went to work at Jones Academy, where she worked for 26 years until she retired. She was also more than willing to help on the family farm. She also liked her flower garden and was well known for her plum trees, the fruit of which she shared willingly with her friends and family. For the last several years, her favorite past-time was spending time with her grandkids and great grandkids. She was a long-time member of the Adamson Baptist Church.


Betty is survived by her husband, Jim Barnes; her children, Jana Barnes and Stoney Barnes; her grandchildren, Bray Killingsworth and wife Johnna, Bryce Killingsworth and wife Karissa, and Dalton; her great grandchildren, Sydney, Jack, Avery, and Tux Killingsworth; a brother-in-law, Benny Powell; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Benton and husband Mike, Larenda Bowen, and Nita Bowen; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Rita Powell; and 2 brothers, Sonny and Joe Bowen.
