Merel Julia Whiteis, 98, of Owatonna, died Friday, May 9, 2008 at the Owatonna Hospital.
Merel Nass was born March 15, 1910 on a farm west of Owatonna, daughter of Fred and Nettie (Rhoades) Nass and graduated from Owatonna High School. On Sept. 3, 1930 she was married to Ross Whiteis by Padre Clemans who also baptized her with the water from the River Jordan in Israel taken from the Traditional place where Jesus was baptized. Merel was an avid flower gardener and ran the Blue Willow Restaurant and girl's dorm for several years. She was also a caregiver for elderly neighbors and relatives for many years.
She is survived by a daughter, Joyce Whiteis of Owatonna; sons, Jim Whiteis of Owatonna, Dale (and Margaret) Whiteis of Huddleston, Va., Clayt Whiteis of Des Moines, Iowa; six grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; sister, Verna Slezak of Owatonna and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1968 and two grandsons, two brothers and three sisters.
Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Tuesday from 1-2 p.m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 13 at 2 p.m. at Michaelson Funeral Home with Dr. Ronald D. Wilson officiating. Interment will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Owatonna.
