Gladys Ioma Hand was born May 13, 1903 to Wilber H. Hand and Florence Elizabeth Ward. Wilber was 47 and Florence was 19 when they married in 1901. After Gladys was born, Wilber and Florence either divorced (or Wilber died). Gladys' mother, Florence, married William Harrison Goodman, Sr., and Gladys had siblings, Addis Naomi Goodman (Ruekle), Beatrice Ione Goodman (Taylor), William Harrison Goodman Jr. and James Edwin Goodman.

Gladys married her first husband, James Carl Johnson (1901-1937) on April 16, 1919. Carl was killed in 1937 in an accident when he was working for Texas Power and Light and accidentally came in contact with a live electrical wire. Gladys was left with four young children: James Ottis Johnson, Harrell Eugene Johnson, Chlotea Elizabeth Johnson (Harrison) and Kenneth Lavern Johnson. She was a single mother and made her living as a nurse, working for several years at Gaston Episcopal Hospital in Dallas, Texas. She later married Thomas John McKenna. He also preceded her in death. Gladys died October 27, 1981 in Ennis, Ellis County, Texas. She was survived by her children and several grandchildren as well as her siblings.
