William "Bill" Alfred Polk, 62, of Gaithersburg died Thursday, April 17, 2008, at home of cancer. He was born Sept. 14, 1945, in Boston. He enlisted in the Army in 1963, an affiliation he kept for nearly 30 years, and rose to the rank of captain. During his tour of duty, he attended Infantry School, 7th Army NCO Academy, Bad Toltz in Germany, Officer Candidate School in Fort Benning, Ga., U.S. Armed Forces Institute in Madison, Wis., and was an instructor at USA Intelligence School at Fort Holabird in Baltimore. He served in Army intelligence as an interrogator in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968. After discharge from active duty, he continued service in the Reserves and Maryland National Guard. He married Jacqueline Jester Boisvert in 1969 and settled in Taneytown in 1975, where he was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, a volunteer firefighter and an emergency medical technician. He worked at Taneytown Grain & Supply until 1984, and returned to federal service in 1985, working for the Defense Mapping Agency in Fort Belvoir, Va. He eventually rose to the position of instructor at the Defense Mapping School, a position he held until 2003. In 2004, he became a training specialist for the Morale, Welfare and Recreation division for the Naval District of Washington, where he helped plan the annual Naval Birthday Gala and trained employees in customer service. At the time of his death, he was a lector at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Gaithersburg. He survived his first bout with lung cancer in 2001, and was declared cancer-free last spring but was diagnosed with terminal bone cancer and lung cancer in February. Surviving are a son, Ryan Polk of Atlanta; a longtime partner, Karen Forney; a sister, Ellen Mitzel of Los Angeles; three nephews; a niece; and five step-grandchildren. A Mass will held June 13 at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, 115 S. Frederick Ave., Gaithersburg. A memorial service and interment will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 15 at Arlington National Cemetery, 214 McNair Road, Arlington, Va. (Carroll Co Times - 5/4/2008)
