William Swetland was the son of Belding and Sarah (Gay) Swetland. He was the husband of Catharine (Seiler) Swetland. They were married September 28, 1819. Catharine died October 6, 1893.

William Swetland was Postmaster of Wyoming Borough in 1830. He was also one of the early merchants. His store was below the family residence of Payne Pettebone, on the main road from Kingston to Wyoming.

The Home for Friendless Children for the Borough of Wilkes Barre was incorporated April 11, 1862. William Swetland was on the first Board of Trustees.
