215 Persns, mostly Irish and English immigrants, drowned when the american ships Bristol and Mexico were wrecked in teh winter storms of 1836-1837 off the south shore of Long Island. 139 bodies were recovered. They are buried near the monument. 67 members of the Pearsall family are buried in the sand hole cemetery. Nearby is the grave Wright Pearsall, namesake of Pearsall's Corners, Lynbrooks former name.

This site was dedicated by the Lynbrook Historical Committee in 1990.
