He was the first son of Dr. Alexander and Amelia (Hockman) Shaw.
Bull began his working life as a miner and then later tried dentistry. He said he "...didn't want to look in people's dirty mouths all his life...," so he quit that profession and worked for the railroad. In 1900, he was living at the home of Laura's brother with Laura, Dessie and Bertha.
Bull could be very antagonistic. The story is told that while he was working for the railroad, during a layover in a small town, he washanging around the railroad yards. The police asked to see his railroad pass. He replied that his face was his pass. The police took this as a smart-alec answer, so attempted to arrest him. He first beat up two officers, and after reinforcements were sent in, he took on an additional three. During the fray, he took a billy club away from one officer and smashed the others over their steel helmets. He fled back to Grafton, but had to be smuggled out of town. He hid out in Wheeling; Unfortunately his antics had put his family in severe financial straights.
He was married to Laura Belle Freeze (Aug.11,1874-Aug. 29, 1950) on Feb. 27, 1900 by the Rev Crawford L. Queen at the home of the bride. Laura was born in Taylor Co., West Virginia, the daughter of William A. and Sarah Freeze. During their marriage, they were constantly changing residences. When Bull would return to Grafton after out of town trips, he always had to check in with the railroad office to find out where he'd be sleeping that night.Bull died when he was caught and crushed between coal cars on a 17-mile grade near Altamont, Md. He was not killed outright, but died shortly after his removal to hospital at Oakland, Md.
Laura is buried in Indiana.
