In the fall of 1849, Able and Sarah Smith left their home in Jamestown, Hendrix Co., IN in covered wagons with all their possessions and their seven children, ages from 3 to 18. They brought with them a few cows and calves, a crate of chickens and a good supply of garden seed and potatoes to plant in the spring. They settled east of Squaw Creek in Section 15 (Warren Co., IA). They built a cabin and some leanto sheds. As the rain caused the creek to flood, they moved farther up the hill side. Then on March 27, 1850 Smith bought 80 acres in Section 11, from Sarah Hackney, where they later built a house. They hauled their lumber from the South River. In 1857 Smith bought 160 acres adjoining the 80 he had from Hugh Barker. Irvin Hershey owned the land where the home place was. In 1858 he donated land for the Smith Cemetery. On March 19, 1869 he buried his wife on the homestead and on August 18, 1891, he was buried beside her. Hackney Grove was on the Abel Smith homestead. They had Sunday School picnics and basket dinners in the summer time. After his wife died, he lived with his daughter, Mary "Polly." He is buried in the Smith Cemetery, Warren County, Iowa.
