Longtime Anchorage resident Hulda Margaret Christine Martens, 93, died April 3, 1996, at Tacoma Lutheran Home and Retirement Center in Tacoma, Wash. A memorial service was held at Anchorage Lutheran Church with the Rev. Roland Fritz officiating. Interment was held at a later date in the pioneer section of Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery.

Ms. Martens, the eldest of 10 children, was born Feb. 13, 1903, in Persia, Iowa, to German immigrants Marcus and Emma Bredenkamp Martens. At age 15, due to her father's health, she moved with her family to Texas. Her mother died the following January during an influenza epidemic, leaving her to mother her seven brothers and sisters. The family returned to Iowa, where her father died. One by one, members of the family began moving to Alaska in 1932. In 1935, her brother Henry's wife, Evelyn, died, leaving four more children for Ms. Martens to mother. Ms. Martens, her brother and the four children arrived in Anchorage in 1944. Ms. Martens worked part time in Anchorage women's clothing stores and eventually bought a shop she called Mona Lee's. She later sold it and purchased Theresa's Apparel, which she ran until retiring in 1971. Ms. Martens loved family gatherings, traveling, good music and food and beautiful clothes. She loved singing and, in her youth, was an accomplished pianist. She was a member of Pioneers of Alaska and, when she was able, was active in Anchorage Lutheran Church, where she was a member for 52 years. Ms. Martens was preceded in death by her sisters, Sidonia Gill and twins Alma and Wilma, and four brothers, Henry, Leonard, Arnold and Lawrence.

She is survived by her sister, Lorraine, brother and sister-in-law, Wallace and Lee, and two sisters-in-law, Betty and Pauline Martens, all of Anchorage; many nieces and nephews, Joan and Howard Burns of Tacoma, Carol and Maurice T. Trotman of Kill Devil Hills, N.C., Sharon Ksander of Alexandria, Va., and Sidonia and Ray Hill of Wasilla, Neil and Shirley Martens, Larry and Diane Gill, Russell and Barbara Gill, Greg Gill, Christine Gill, Marcus and Ginger Martens, Mary Lynn and Michael Harned, Kenneth Martens, and Dana and Lynette Martens, all of Anchorage; 26 great-nieces and great-nephews and 10 great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. Memorial donations may be sent to Anchorage Lutheran Church, 1420 N St., Anchorage 99501-4961. Arrangements were handled by Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
