John Drake was born in Hampton-in-Arden, Warwickshire, England in 1616, and baptized there on August 25 of that year. His parents were John Drake and Lettice Shakespear. His mother died when he was only seven years old, and his father soon remarried. Around 1630, his father brought the whole family; his sons by his first marriage, and his new wife and daughters, to New England. The family settled in Windsor, where John grew to manhood.
John married Hannah Moore on November 30, 1648, in Windsor. She was the daughter of John Moore of Windsor. John and Hannah raised a family of eleven children in Windsor. The date of John's death is not known, but he must have died in late 1689. Hannah had died in 1686.
John wrote his will on September 12, 1689 and it was proved on November 11. His wife is not mentioned, because she preceeded him in death. In the will, he says he is "of Windsor". He wrote the will in September and died in November, he didn't have time to move to another town, so he must have died in Windsor. Since John died in Windsor in 1689, he must have been buried in the Palisado. He mentions sons Job, Enoch, Simon, Joseph. He mentions son John's children, John and two daughters, the son having died before his father. He mentions his daughters Mary and Ruth, but it is clear that there are more daughters, probably married. He makes his son-in-law Samuel Barber one of his executors.
