Longtime Kirbyville High School teacher, Jimmie Joe Shepherd, 64, passed away at UTMB Hospital in Galveston.

A native of Orange, he had lived in Kirbyville for 31 years. He retired from KHS in 2007 after 24 years of teaching with 22 of those years being at Kirbyville High School. He taught Marketing, Retail Merchandising and Entrepreneurship. He was also the pastor of the Gospel Lighthouse Church in Kirbyville for over 20 years.

In a story last year announcing his retirement, Shepherd was quoted in the Banner to say, "I'll miss my students. The kids made it all worthwhile." The same could be said about Shepherd as his untimely death was a surprise to his students and close knit family at the school district.

Funeral services will be at 10 am. Thursday, May 8 at Gospel Lighthouse Church in Kirbyville with burial at the Kirbyville Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine Shepherd of Kirbyville; daughter, Angel Tharp and husband Phillip of Kirbyville; brothers Frank Shepherd of Atlanta Georgia, John Shepherd of Port Arthur; sister, Sarah Shepherd of Kirbyville; and grandchildren, Kaitlin and Colby Tharp.

When I must leave you for a little while
Please do not grieve or shed wild tears
And hug your sorrow to you through the years.
But start out bravely with a gallant smile;
And for my sake and in my name
Live on and do all things the same;
Feed not your loneliness on empty days
But fill each waking hour in useful ways,
Reach out your hand in comfort and cheer
And I in turn will comfort you and hold you near;
And never, never be afraid to die,
For I am waiting for you in the sky!
