He was a member of Elyria VFW Post 1079, Elyria American Legion Post 12 and Elyria Amvets Post 32.
John is survived by his wife of 57 years, Doris K. (Trigg); daughters, Sheila Dieckman, Heidi Shreffler, Charlene Walker, Darlene Shreffler, Wanda Brunaczki, Betty Smith and Joyce Grych; sons, Larry, Ronald and Kenneth "Clyde" Shreffler; 25 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Donald and Orie Ernest; his parents, Ora and Opal Shreffler; his step-mother, Ida (Hicks) Shreffler; brothers, Richard Shreffler and Ora Dale Shreffler; sisters, Geraldine Corrigan, Marjorie Eagle, and infant sister, Thelma Ruth Shreffler.
