Helen Louise James Gilbert was raised by Henry Clay and Marzella Irvin. She was the daughter of Emma Jarrett of Macon, and daughter-in-law of the late Rev. Dr. Ralph Mark Gilbert and Eloria S. Gilbert.
Her early education was at Saint Peter Claver Elementary School, and Ballard High School. In September of 1947, Helen married William H. Gilbert and to this union two daughters were born, who survive:
- Helen Marzella (Gilbert) Leslie
- Quintress Juanita Gilbert
Mrs. Gilbert attended Grady School of Nursing and trained and worked in various capacities of nursing most of her life, including Saint Luke Hospital and Macon Hospital. She served as a nurse in the offices of Dr. J. Lon King, Jr., for twenty years.
She leaves to mourn her passing, two devoted daughters; three grandchildren; one son-in-law, Cedric T. Leslie; a sister, Constance Jarrett Shelly; an aunt, Ives Smith Banks; her beloved mother-in-law, Eloria S. Gilbert of New York; one sister-in-law, Ruth Lino of New York; a brother-in-law, Ralph Gilbert of Macon and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
