Geo. Sutherland, 94, Dies at Home Following Stroke
George Lathaniel Sutherland was born in Douglas County, March 12, 1856 and passed away at his home south of town April 14, 1950 at the age of 94 years, 1 month, and 1 day. He was the youngest child and only son of Thomas and Jane Briscoe Sutherland. Those of his family who have preceded him in death are three sisters; Amanda Plummer, Mary Cyrus, and Valeria Smelzer; two-half brothers: O. B. Cyrus, W. B. Cyrus; and two half-sisters: Mrs. J. C. Goin and Mrs. M. H. Craft.
On July 18, 1880, he was united in marriage Nancy E. Carey and to this union was born four daughters: Dorothy who passed away in infancy, Beulah Powell, who died October 15, 1941, Hildegarde Fanning who died in 1918; and Irma Gillette of Portland who survives. On November 8, 1902, he was united in marriage to Mary Etta Brock, who survives, as do two daughters; Mrs. E. P. Caldwell of Lebanon and Mrs. Glen Holland of Scio. Also Surviving are seven grandchildren and six great-grandsons and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Sutherland had lived his entire life in Oregon, 92 years being spent in Linn Co. He was a member of a family from which the town of Sutherlin was named, but had his name changed early in his career. He was also the last of a family through marriage, which numbered 21 children.
He attended Oregon Agricultural Colege, now OSC in 1875 to 1876 and taught in Scio and other schools in the area for a number of years.
In 1880 he was ordained a minister in the Christian Church and was a licensed minister of the Baptist Church. His pastor work in later years however had consisted mainly of the performance of marriage and funeral services.
His early manhood was spent on the donation land claim of his stepfather, William Cyrus, and after some years spent as a store clerk, he returned to farming where he remained the balance of his life.
Keenly interested in local, county, state, and national civic and political affairs, Mr. Sutherland wrote campaign speeches for many political candidates though never ran for office himself.
Funeral services were held at the Christian Church in Scio, Monday, April 17th, with the Rev. Harvey J. Schmidt, of Lebanon officiating. Vocalist and pianist was Mrs. Hugh Kirkpatrick also of Lebanon.
Mrs. Riley Montgomery and Mrs. Walter Miller were in charge of the flowers.

{Daughter Irma Sutherland was born April 10, 1888 in Linn Co, OR and died May 28, 1961 in Multnomah Co, OR. She married Glenn G. Gillette)
