The four families settled in the Forks of the Santiam, Fletcher about three miles away from brother Johns place. His claim was numbered as Section 11, Township 11, Range 1 West, Linn County. The town of Crabtree, Oregon, was named for Fletcher Crabtree.
One time " Fletch" was returning from Oregon City in his prairie Schooner with supplies. He stopped awhile at John Jays's. It had been raining and the streams were flooded. When Fletcher went to go home he drove his horses into the swift-flowing water and they went into a hole. He released the horses, the wagon floated some distance. Neighbors helped Fletcher out and they called the stream Crabtree Creek. Crabtree Creek rises in the Cascade Mountains in the north central portion of Linn County and flows northwesterly to its confluence with the South Santiam River southwest of Scio. Crabtree Creek was named John Jay Crabtree according to a history of Linn County.
