Coty came to us in 1991, and was 3 years old (which made him the same age as my daughter), he was not suppose to stay. A guy that my husband worked with, knew a lady who had to find a home for her dog, because she was going into a nursing home. I agreed to keep him for a week until she made those arrangements. He stayed for the week, and I wouldn't let anyone take my dog.

He was very protective of the kids, which made him my best friend. He was playful, and he was fun, he let the kids climb all over him, but he also would not allow the bullies that lived around us, to pick on the kids. I had always been told that you should not have a Chow around children, but he was a wonderful addition to our family and was absolutely wonderful with all the kids.

He was so loving, he would lay down at your feet, and rub on your knees with his face. He would talk to us every time we came home, as if he was telling us that he missed us and he would wiggle from head to toe.

When we moved out to the country, there was a time when he had to stay at my brother-in-laws, until we could move into the house, meanwhile we were staying in an apartment in Indianapolis, and driving the kids back and forth to school in Morristown. I stopped each day to make sure that he was okay. One of the days after I stopped to see him, he broke free of his chain and apparently followed me. He apparently got hit by a car. When we moved into the house we could not find him, and we looked everywhere. The last day of our move he apparently heard us talking and came across Highway 52 to the house. He was dragging his leg. I immediately took him to the vet. They told me that he had broken it, but that it was already set, that they could re-break it, but that they felt that he would be okay without them having to do it.

We were there a few months, and one day he came home and brought a girlfriend with him. His girlfriend was a little black teddy bear chow, named Sweetie. They were the parents of several litters of puppies until we finally had to get Cotie fixed. He had hip displasia, which was worsened by the fact that he had been hit by the car. While he was recouperating from the surgery, Sweetie went into heat, and he tore through a closed door to get to her. That was his girl.

Cotie had to leave me one more time, for a year, going to stay with my ex-husband, while we stayed in an apartment. It was our plan to bring him to our new house but he did not make it to come home with us.

He died peacefully in his sleep, and is buried in our home pet cemetery on the farm where he had spent so many years of his life in Morristown, Indiana.

We miss him terribly with each day that goes by.
