1 DEAD, 3 HURT IN ATTEMPT TO BEAT TRACTION

Driver Cut in New Bethel Crossing Crash---Injured Girl`s Fiance is Killed


One man was killed and three presons injured when an Indianapolis & Southeastern Railroad Company traction car struck an automobile in New Bethel yesterday afternoon. The dead: HARRY B. MAY, 24 years old, 501 Coffey Street, salesman. The injured: MRS. MINNIE SMITH, 49 years old, Stop 12, Shelbyville Road, possible internal injuries and cuts on the legs and head. MISS INA SMITH, 23 years old, of the Shelbyville Road address, daughter of Mrs. Smith, injuries to the hips and possible internal injuries. JAMES NICHOLAS, 17 years old, 2140 Linden Street, driver of the automobile, cuts and bruises on the right side. Young Nicholson attempted to beat an inbound traction car to the East Main street crossing in New Bethel and the automobile was struck on the right side.

Gets Full Force of Crash

May, who was sitting on the right side of the narrow coupe seat with Miss Smith on his lap, received the full effect of the crash. His skull was fractured and his neck broken. Miss Smith and her mother were thrown from the car. Charles Bundy, 56 years old. Arlington, operator of the one-mantraction car, said that he saw the automobile approaching and thought that it would stop. Bundy stopped the traction car within two lengths.`I saw the interurban coming but thought I could beat it,` Nicholson said. The injured were carried into the homes of R. L. Crews and Ted Hays and given first aid treatment by Dr. C. S. Brown at New Bethel. They were sent later to the Methodist hospital. Deputy Sheriffs Mays and Snider, who were investigating arrested Bundy on a charge of involuntary manslaughter and released him on his own recognizance.

Engaged to Be Married

May and Miss Smith, who were engaged to be married, Mrs. Smith and Nicholson were on their way to spend the week-end on the Van Bally farmat the Shelbyville road address, where Mrs. Smith is employed. They were riding in Miss Smith`s automobile. Miss Smith is employed by Eli Lilly & Co. Funeral arrangements for May had not been completed last night. Nicholson, who lives with his mother, Mrs. Anna Winkler, is a pupil at school No. 34, where he is in the eighth grade was born in Utah, coming to this city when a boy. He attended the public schools and was amember of the Trinity M. E. Church. Survivors are the parents, Mrs. and Mrs. G. B. May, two sisters, Mrs. Dolly Pullen and Miss Mary May, and a brother, Walter May.

FUNERAL TOMORROW FOR HARRY B. MAY


Funeral services for Harry B. May, 24 years old, who was killed when the automobile in which he was riding was struck by an Indianapolis & Southeastern Railroad Company traction car in New Bethel Saturday afternoon, will be held at his home, 501 Coffey street, at 10 o`clock tomorrow morning.

Burial will be in Floral Park Cemetery.

James Nicholson, 17 years old, 2140 Linden street, driver of the automobile, Miss Ina Smith, 23 years old, and Mrs. Minnie Smith, 49 years old, other passengers in the car, were taken to Methodist hospital. Mrs.Smith`s is believed serious due to internal injuries, while her daughter and Nicholson are improving. The latter two suffered cuts and bruises. Surviving May are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. B. May, two sisters,Mrs. Dolly Pullen and Miss Mary May, and a brother, Walter May. He was engaged to marry Miss Smith.
