As an 18 year old, Sgt Sniffin was a young trooper with the 7th Cavalry. At the Battle of the Little Bighorn he was the guidon bearer for his troop, M Troop. To save his guidon from being captured during the retreat from the Valley Fight, Sniffin tore the guidon from the staff and shoved it into his shirt. Sniffin made the Army a career and later fought in Spanish American War.
