Ashley was the son of Victory and Lucretia Sarah (Flood) Peters. As a boy, he came with his family to Adrian, Monroe County, Wisconsin. Ashley was a Civil War vet. He was a private in the Union Army. Ashley served in Companies L, D and A; 11th regiment; Missouri Calvary. He married Wealthy Alzada Stearns on the 12th of July, 1874 in Clark County, Wisconsin. They had eleven children: Bertha May (Peters) Livingston Path Pitts, Mary Elizabeth (Peters) House, James Arthur Peters, George Earl Peters, John William Peters, Benjamin Peters (died as an infant), Edward Milton Peters, Laura Leah (Peters) Eshelman, Edith Sarah (Peters) Buckner, Thomas Ray Peters, Mabel Evangeline (Peters) Thornburg.
