Mary was born to Michael and Wilhelmina Doebbeling Reifel in Peppertown, Indiana. Her father immigrated from Germany and her maternal grandparents immigrated from Hannover, Germany. She was christened Anna Maria in the St. Nicholas German Lutheran Church in Peppertown. Her parents and grandparents were founders of this little church. She met and married Fred Haman in 1888 in Franklin County, Indiana.

They moved their family to Rosenberg about 1906. Mary loved working in her yard, and she had beautiful flower beds surrounding their home on the corner of Ave. G & 6th Street. She was also known for her cooking and the Sunday dinners she prepared for several area pastors. If she heard of a family in need, she was the first to gather food and deliver it to them. Her family still remembers her famous cookies, which we called "Grandma's Cookies". She always had a cookie jar filled when you visited.

Mary was also a great admirer of Governor W. Lee O'Daniel. She loved to crochet and sent him some of her handiwork. She received pictures and letters from him and his wife and was quite proud of them.

Mary and Fred had three daughters - Cora Haman Wills, Stella Haman Ward, and Emma Haman Killebrew. Emma died in 1937, leaving a young daughter, Mary Emma, who was reared by Mary and Fred. Daughters, Cora and Stella were both widowed at a young age, and Mary and Fred were always there to help them with their children. As a great-grandchild I have warm memories of the times I spent at their home.
