He was born June 25, 1939, in Ada, Oklahoma, to Leo Corter and Iva (Alan) Corter.

Sonny served his country in the United States Army in the 82nd Airborne and 101st Airborne divisions for 27 years. While deployed to Vietnam, he was in the Special Forces and made over 100 parachute jumps. After retiring from his military career, he worked 30 years in civil service at Tinker Air Force Base in Midwest City, Oklahoma. He married Maelynn E. Benedict on July 21, 2014, in Shawnee, Oklahoma.

Sonny enjoyed doing leather work, shooting guns, and packing bullets. He loved gardening and watching western movies (especially those with John Wayne and other old western actors).

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.
