Susan Wing was born in 1797 just across the Ohio River in Mason County, Kentucky. Susan's parents have not been identified yet.

In 1818, at the age of twenty-one, she was married in Mason County, Kentucky to David P. Murphy who was twenty-five years old at the time. David too was born in Mason County and before married life served in the War of 1812 as a private in Captain Joseph Mead's Company of the Kentucky Militia. Together they had three children, David D., Sarah, and Nancy.

They arrived in Kalida, Ohio in 1826 and are known as the first white settlers in Putnam County. Susan gave birth to her second child, Sarah in February of 1826, so it's possible the Murphy family arrived in 1825 to avoid traveling in the Ohio winter. Susan, her husband, and son floated down the Blanchard River in a canoe from Fort Findlay and landed at the mouth of the Blanchard and the Auglaize River where they stayed for a short time. The Murphy family then continued upstream, three miles, where they set up a permanent log cabin.

Susan Murphy passed away at the age of 39 years, in 1836. Despite not physically living in Kalida she is widely credited in history books as the first burial in the Kalida Cemetery.

No headstone has been identified and since the W.P.A files reported that Dalilah was the first burial, she may not have had a stone marker.
