Burgess, 82, died Thursday morning in his home.
He was a retired farmer and a native of Southampton County. He was the husband of Mrs. Lillie Joyner Burgess and a son of Matt and Mrs. Jennie Branch Burgess.
He was a charter member of Vincent Grove Methodist Church.
Besides his widow, surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Harold B. Covington of Franklin; four sons, E.M. Burgess of Franklin, J.M. Burgess and R.A. Burgess of Courtland, and R.E. Burgess of Petersburg; a sister, Mrs. Annie Hasting of Capron; 19 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
