A graveside funeral service for Matt A. Burgess was conducted Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in Riverside Cemetery, Courtland, by the Rev. Robert Tyson. W.J.M. Holland & Sons Funeral Home, Franklin was in charge.

Pallbearers were Edward Crenshaw, Lloyd Burgess, David Johnson, Lewis Bryant,, Burt Ramsey, Roy Covington, Paul Kirkland and Carrol W. Barnes.

Burgess, 82, died Thursday morning in his home.

He was a retired farmer and a native of Southampton County. He was the husband of Mrs. Lillie Joyner Burgess and a son of Matt and Mrs. Jennie Branch Burgess.

He was a charter member of Vincent Grove Methodist Church.

Besides his widow, surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Harold B. Covington of Franklin; four sons, E.M. Burgess of Franklin, J.M. Burgess and R.A. Burgess of Courtland, and R.E. Burgess of Petersburg; a sister, Mrs. Annie Hasting of Capron; 19 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
