Army Sgt. Jerry L. DeLoach, 45, of Jackson, Ga.; assigned to the Warrior Transition Unit at Fort Knox, Ky.; died July 7, 2007, of a non-combat-related injury. He had been medically evacuated from theater.

FORT KNOX, Ky. (AP) - The Department of Defense has announced the death a Fort Knox soldier from noncombat related wounds. The statement on Saturday said that 45-year-old Sgt. Jerry L. DeLoach of Jackson, Ga., died July 7, 2007. Col. Gary Keck says the death is included as an Operation Iraqi Freedom casualty since DeLoach was medically evacuated from Iraq, even though he didn't die from his injuries there. Keck says the Army is announcing the death now as a matter of record keeping. DeLoach was assigned to the Warrior Transition Unit at Fort Knox.

The death was announced as a casualty of the Iraq war and was publicly disclosed as a matter of record-keeping of combat-related deaths, Shaffery said. However, his death resulted from a non-combat related injury, according to the Defense Department.
DeLoach, an Indiana National Guardsman assigned to a transportation company, was medically evacuated from theater, thus it being counted as a war-related fatality.
A second Indiana National Guardsman assigned to the wounded warrior unit at Fort Knox, Sgt. Gerald Cassidy, died September 2007 in his barracks of what the Army determined was an accidental prescription drug overdose.
The Army said in February that 11 soldiers have died in warrior transition units since revamping its soldier care program last June. Of those deaths, four were ruled a suicide, three an accidental overdose, three were still under investigation and one was a motor vehicle accident.
Shaffery said she was unsure if DeLoach's death was included in those numbers.
