Soldier From Waelder Killed in Action

Word was received here Monday morning from the War Department that Harvey Sellers, son of Mrs. Den Sellers, Elm Grove of the Armed forces stationed in Italy was killed in action on November 22.

Gonzales Inquirer Feb. 10, 1944

Harvey E. Sellers, who was killed in Action November 22, 1943, was born on a farm in the Elm Grove Community March 28, 1921. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Sellers. His childhood was spent in the same community.
He attended the public schools of Elm Grove community until he had finished the 10th grade. His father died when he was 18 years old, and it fell to his lot to care for his widowed mother. It was in this responsibility that he showed such marked ability and devotion to his duty. It was his ambition to provide his mother a comfortable home and means of a livelihood without worry. It turned out just that way. He bought his mother the home desired for her and left her and insurance that will care for her reasonably well for the remainder of her life.
Harvey joined the National Guard some three years before the World War II.
After Pearl Harbor and after the United States went into war with her other Allies, I volunteered as a permanent part of the U.S. Army and trained in the States until he was sent across to take part in the North Africa Campaign. He was one of those first to land on Italian soil at Salerno under General Clark's Fifth Army. Those who are living said that he was one of the bravest soldiers they had ever seen.

There are three outstanding qualities among many others, for which the young man was noted, says his former teacher, S, H. McCrory. The first was his extreme love and kindness for his mother, another was the devotion to the cause of his country and another was the devotion to his buddies, one on occasion when one of them was wounded and helpless he risked his life by carrying the wounded soldier back. He kept his promise to his mother for her and kept faith with his country so much that he gave his life on the field of battle November 22, 1943. He could give no more. He refused to give less. He took extreme risks for his comrades.
