Richard graduated from Overton High School in 1964. He received his Associates Degree from Kilgore College a few years later. He served in Vietnam during the Vietnam war and was awarded the National Defense Service medal; the Parachute Badge; Vietnam Service Medal; Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 device; 2 Purple Hearts; Combat Infantry Badge; President Unit Citation and the Bronze Star. While in the Army, he attended the Lim flu Vietnamese language school, took CER training and attended the Combat Reconnaissance School. He was a Green Beret and served in the Special Forces. After the military he worked for Eastman Chemical Company in Longview Texas Division from April 8, 1974 to May 31, 2001.
