Virgil served as a Staff Sergeant & Waist Gunner on B-24H #42-94905, 846th Bomber Squadron, 489th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Prattsville, Greene County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on March 1, 1943 in Albany, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being Single, with dependents.

B-24H #42-94905 took off from Station 365, Halesworth, England on a bombing mission over St. Lo, France. They were hit by ground anti-aircraft fire that caused a fire on board and blew part of their left wing off causing them to crash near Saint-Lô, France during the war. Only one crew member was able to parachute out before the crash (see below).

Virgil was "Killed In Action" in this crash.

He was awarded the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.

He was originally interred in France and was later repatriated here on June 8, 1950.

Service # 32850955

American Legion Post #1327 in Prattsville, New York was named in his honor.

The reason he is named on a group headstone is because when soldiers & sailors were killed in close proximity to each other they were unable, at that time, to identify them separately and interred their remains together in one grave.
