Joseph served as a Staff Sergeant & Left Waist Gunner on B-17F “Windy City Challenger” (#42-3049), 422nd Bomber Squadron, 305th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Windham County, Connecticut prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on August 6, 1940, prior to the war, in Hartford, Connecticut. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in construction and also as Single, without dependents.

Joseph was "Killed In Action" when his B-17, while on a mission over Villacoublay, France, has attacked and shot down by two German FW-190 and crashed during the war. Four other airmen were able to parachute out. He was awarded the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.
