Jabez Hanmer, was born in Montgomery County, New York. After his service as a soldier in the War of 1812 at Sacket's Harbor, accompanied by his wife and children, Peter, David, Maria, and Susan, moved from Mindon, Herkimer Co. New York and settled in Tompkins in 1814. In 1815, he removed to Tyrone, Schuyler County, New York and settled in Pine Grove, NY. Mr. Hanmer stored his goods and lived in the house of John Youngs until he could build one for himself.
During the following years this family farmed and made improvments on the homestead and farmed in this area until his death in 1865. Jabez and his wife, Eleanor Nellie Mayfield Hanmer, were blessed during this time with 8 children 4 boys 4 girls.
The Methodist Episcopal Church of Pine Grove was formed in the year 1829. Jabez Hanmer and Ellen Hanmer were listed among the first members.
