Courtland – Betty Davis Joyner, 80, widow of Otis Moroe Joyner, Jr., died December 1, 2007. A lifelong resident of Courtland, she was a daughter of the late Ezra W. and Anna Gillette Davis. Mrs. Joyner was a graduate of James Madison University and retired from teaching after 30 years. She was a member of the Southampton County Historical Society, Courtland Bridge Club, and Courtland United Methodist Church. Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Karan J. Hodges and husband, Mark, of Courtland; two grandsons, Timmy and Jason Hodges; and one sister, Anna Davis Thweatt of Richmond. Mrs. Joyner was predeceased by three sisters, Mary D. Gilbert, Jane D. Colglazier, Virginia D. Watkinson, and three brothers, Garland, Gillette, and William Davis. A funeral will be conducted at 4 pm Monday at Courtland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Gordon officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence of Karan and Mark Hodges, 26290 Tyler Circle, Courtland,and suggests memorials be made to Courtland United Methodist Church, 22416 Main Street, Courtland, Va. 23837. Wright Funeral Home is assisting the family.
