Robert “Bob” Dewitt Gorrell age 76, of Taylorsville, MS formerly of Greenville, MS, passed away with his family by his side, on September 05, 2014 after a 4 year battle with Multiple Myeloma.

Bob was the first child born to Robert Gentry and Vera Bryant Gorrell on November 3, 1937 in Indianapolis, IN. He graduated from St. Joseph High School in Greenville, MS in 1957 where he was a four year letterman and Captain of the Fighting Irish Football team. He was awarded a scholarship, in football, to MDJC (then Sunflower Junior College) where he majored in Drafting and Building Technology. In the summers, Bob also worked on river towboats to contribute to his college education.

He was an expert craftsman who had mentored many young men over the years. His love of wood began early. He and his father designed, built and raced boats. He participated in the legendary Greenville to Vicksburg River race. In later years, in his cabinet shop, he designed and built the interiors of many fine homes and businesses. Prior to being diagnosed with cancer, he was an avid craftsman.

Bob was a devoted husband, father and grandfather with a love of history, golf, NASCAR, MS State football, and traveling in his motor home.

He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his college sweetheart and wife of over 54 years, the former Sarah Walker, his daughters Gale Gorrell Knight (Dan) of Seminary and Robbie Gorrell Gary (Chris) of Taylorsville. One grandson, Adam Toth of New Alexandria, PA, granddaughters Jordan Gary of Kennedale, Tx, Sydney Gary of Burleson, TX and Olivia Adams of Taylorsville, MS. Brother Dr. Michael Gorrell (Genann) of Stem, NC, sisters Virginia Belk of Tupelo, MS and Sue Smith (Ernie) of Starkville, MS. Brother-in-law John H. Walker (Stephanie) of Covington, LA, 2 nephews, 5 nieces, many cousins and longtime special friends Sam and Ann Greco of Byram, MS.

Bob was of the Catholic faith. Last rites were given on Friday, September 05, 2014 by Fr Peter Kmiecik. Visitation will be Monday, September 08, 2014 at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Taylorsville, MS from 5 - 8 p.m. Funeral services will be Tuesday, September 09, 2014 at the Taylorsville United Methodist Church at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Timothy T. Beard officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Pallbearers will be Adam Toth, Chris Gary, Dan Knight, Joey Robinson, Brian Sullivan, and Tommy Rowley. Honorary pallbearer is Matthew Rowley.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, 383 Main Street 5th Floor, Norwalk, CT 06851, to the Taylorsville Methodist Church or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
