Ray Lawless was the only child of Ephraim and Myrta Lawless BORN in KS---all the rest of his siblings were born in OK..... after graduating from Washburn University in Topeka, KS in 1920, Ray was appointed Principal of the Delia High School then superintendent. ( by 1922) .... as far as I can figure out, Ray and Hazel Lawless lived in Chicago, IL in 1924 (birth of son Ray) and probably were there from the time of their marriage in June of 1922 ---- soon after the birth of his son, Ray moved to Conway Ark where he was assistant professor of English at Hendrix College ... By Dec 8 1927, Ray had accepted a position as head of the English Dept at Dakota Wesleyan University at Mitchell, S D ...he taught some summer classes in 1930 at the University of South Dakota while living in Mitchell, Davidson Co., SD ( 1930 census) and finally settled in KC, Jackson Co., MO ( death of son 1935 and 1940 census)--from tidbits found, Ray evidently taught in the KC high schools, junior colleges and KCU... Ray Lawless was the author of "Folksingers and Folksongs in America" (1960)... his wife Hazel donated all of the research info he collected for "Folksingers and Folksongs in America" to the Center Archive in 1970.
