Andrew Sanders, Sr. was born to the late Cato and Binah Blake Sanders. He was the youngest of eleven siblings. Five of these siblings were from his father's first marriage to Dolly Sanders. His siblings were: James, Isaac, William (Perry), Hannah, Celia, John, James, Ned, Ethel, Anthony and William Campbell. All of his siblings preceded him in death.

In 1926, he was converted at Lily Pond Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Wesley Ravenel. That same year he joined Mt. Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church under the pastoral leadership of Rev. William Weston. Andrew served on the Senior Choir for many years. He was the leader of Class No. 4 until it became necessary to turn the class over to his dedicated assistant, Jacqueline Manigault, because of his physical inability to fulfill all of his duties. Andrew was appointed an Honorary Member of the Steward Board by Rev. Hoover L. Footman. In 2007, he was selected "Father of the Year". He was dedicated until his passing.

Andrew was blessed with the love of a good woman, Alfair Sanders. This union was blessed with 13 children. His wife passed away on February 12, 2002. Two daughters, Victoria Sanders Powell and Bertha Sanders Reid also preceded him in death.

Brother Sanders received his greatest joy from singing. After undergoing surgery in the year 1958, he was left with damage to his vocal cords. He was not discouraged. Some of his favorite songs were: Run Mary Run, Blow Gabriel, I've Done What You've Told Me To, Sit Down Servant, Oh Mother Mary, I'm Going Home on the Morning Train and I'm Gonna Wait on Death. With his fragile voice, he sang these songs from the heart. "I'm Gonna Wait on Death" was one of his mother's favorite. These were old Gospel songs, familiar to some and never heard before by others. The loving members at Greater Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church were patient as they joined him in singing his songs. For this the family is forever grateful.

He leaves cherished memories to: his children, Asalee Simmons, Ida Bacote (Carl, Sr.), Andrew Sanders, Jr., Carolyn Smalls, Bernett Sanders, Marjorie Williams, Frances Pinckney (Richard Sr.), William Sanders, Derrick Sanders, Bobby Sanders (Bobbie) and Floyd Sanders, Sr. (Sandra); two grandchildren reared in the home, H. Jerome Sanders (Joyce) and Cheryl Sampson (Bernard); 47 grandchildren; 70 great-grandchildren; 25 great, great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Clifton Powell; brother and sisters-in-law, William Green (Marie), Rev. Jane Wineglass, Carrie Green and Pearl Green; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
