From the Michigan Historical Society, published in 1892 - Page 501: Chesterfield, originally a part of Macomb Township was detached therefrom in 1842. some of the first settlers were: ...Benajah Maynard...All these were men who began life here in the wilderness, developed the resources therein, contributed so largely the wealth and prosperity of Macomb County.

Benajah Maynard, son of Benajah Maynard and Lura? Fanny Cornwall, was born in May 1799 in Northfield, Washington, Vermont, USA; Benajah married Salla Sally Howard on 18 Nov 1819 in Bethany, New York, USA.

They had four children:
Lucinda, Alonzo, Caroline, and Adaline

Benajah Maynard of Macomb enlisted in company M, Eighth, Cavalry, Dec 27,1862, at Macomb, for 3 years, age 44. Mustered Feb 3, 1863.,Corporal Oct, 1863. Discharged at Camp Dennison, Ohio, Septb16; 1863.

Benajah lived in New Haven, Macomb, Michigan, United States in 1880. He died on 4 Aug 1881 at the age of 82 and was buried in Hart/Union Burying ground - Chesterfield Cemetary - Chesterfield Road.
